Meet the Horses

Felicity-

2003 Mustang Mare

"Lissy" came to us in June of 2018 from the Kaufman Kill Pen with the help of Grey Oaks Equine Sanctuary.  Felicity means "happiness" and is derived from the Latin word for "good fortune." We picked that name for her because we believed her life with us would bring her happiness, as she was in very poor health. She's one of our lesson horses and is great with kids and adults. Lissy has a quirky personality and is always looking for treats. She is one of the "boss ladies" of the herd.

Elsa-

2008 Grade Mare

Elsa came to us in November of 2018 from the Peabody Kill Pen. Our friend, Jessica Gabel, assisted with her bail price and the emaciated and almost ugly mare began her transformation into our unicorn.  She's one of our lesson horses and is great with kids and adults. Elsa can sometimes be a bit "icy" towards receiving affection, but its really just shyness. She's learning that human hands often have great things.

Carmel-

2009 Haflinger Mare

Carmel came to us in March 2019, with Ginger, from the Thomas Foundation Second Chance Horse Rescue in Pilot Point, TX.  The Thomas Foundation received Carmel from a donor in August of 2018. In May 2019, Carmel gave us a surprise mule colt, Butter"scotch". Scotch, now called Otis, went back to Texas after weaning to a wonderful loving home and we get regular updates.

Carmel is turning into a wonderful trail horse. She is occasionally used for adult riders but tends to be a little nervous still about other people (except Sam) riding her. They say that horses pick a favorite, and it is pretty clear who Carmel prefers. We continue to work with her and have children brush and groom, but it will be another season yet before we can use her for young children.

Lexie-

2011 Grade Mare

Lexie came to us in June 2021, with Tina & Lance, from the Thomas Foundation Second Chance Horse Rescue in Pilot Point, TX.  The Thomas Foundation received Lexie in April 2015, and she was previously adopted into a loving home, where she was trained to ride and loved dearly. Circumstances changed, and Lexie had to return to the Thomas Foundation a few years ago. We're excited to see what Lexie remembers from her riding days and look forward to adding her into the lesson string soon. She's petite in build, but not petite in attitude. Lexie is bold and bossy in the pasture, and makes sure she gets her share of treats.

Lexie is currently being ridden by Sam and Knox, off and on. She's a little buddy sour in the arena, but loves to be the leader on the trails. With time she'll be great as a group lesson horse, but only works for private lessons right now.

Ginger-

2012 Thoroughbred Mare

Ginger (Jockey Club- "One Crafty Chic") came to us in March 2019 from the Thomas Foundation Second Chance Horse Rescue.  She is great for adults and kids who aren't afraid of heights, because she's our tallest. Ginger is super sweet and loves to get treats and attention. She seems to respond well to her name. We're continuing to work with Ginger on standing still, as she is a very impatient girl, but she is actively used in lessons and we trust her with everyone.

Lance-

2012 Appaloosa Gelding

Lance is a compact little leopard Appaloosa gelding. He seems to be drawn to kids, but he's also still shy. Lance is also from the Thomas Foundation in TX, and arrived in KS in June of 2021. We believe he has been previously broke to ride, but also think he'll need a lot of refreshing before he can join the lesson string. For now, just make sure to give him a lot of love and help him learn that people aren't predators.

He will be started under saddle (or maybe restarted, since we don't know his history) in the spring of 2022. Lance has settled down a lot since his arrival here, but still has some trust issues. We will begin allowing youth to groom and spend time with him soon.

Hailey-

2016(?) Thoroughbred Mare

Hailey is a very special girl who came to us in September of 2021 from the Thomas Foundation. She is tattooed on her upper lip, but it is missing some digits and we've been unable to identify her with the Jockey Club with the information avaible. We believe her to be a 2016 born mare, with a few race starts under her belt before being sold at auction and landing in a TX Kill Pen in winter of 2021. The Thomas Foundation acquired her in August of 2021 from the rescue that saved her life, after that rescue had some unfortunate circumstances. When we returned Tina because she just wasn't settling, Hailey came back with us.

She's a very shy girl and doesn't like her head and upper neck touched. It took a few months, but she's accepted that we're willing to let her be a horse, and has started to appreciate our affections. We can tell that she's still unsure about being handled though. Hailey is broke to ride, but won't enter the lesson string until she's calm and comfortable with all people. She's young and has plenty of years to give us, so there's no sense in rushing things.

Caesar-

2017 Mustang Gelding

Caesar was born on our homestead, out of his dam, Lilly. Lilly was a kill-pen rescue by Grey Oaks Equine Sanctuary, who now resides at a sanctuary in Texas. Caesar was born 10 days after his dam arrived here, even though the vet though we had 60 days to prepare, and has been a mischief maker ever since.

Caesar spent the summer of 2021 with Beth Daniels, of Sonshine Working Horses, being started under saddle. Caesar is still a lazy boy, and very much acts like the "baby" of the farm. Sam is continuing to ride him regularly and we hope he can enter the lead-line ride group this year.

Sonny-

2018 Grade Gelding

Sonny is another Thomas Foundation adoption. He originally came with Sox (see Past Horses), but has settled in well. Sonny is not yet old enough to be broke to ride, but will be once he turns 4. We don't know his birthday, so we guess his age based on his dentition. Roughly 1 year after Sonny "loses his caps" (horse baby teeth) we will begin riding training. We expect that to be Spring/Summer of 2022. Until then, he gets regular handling and lots of goodies.
